\"d81ea8bc6b1736b9ce0385398383c5dd\"<\/a>I\u00a0hate to\u00a0say it, but there are few people I really look up to in terms of graphic design. And, it’s definitely not because of the lack of talent out there. While I was able to carve\u00a0out\u00a0a career in publishing in spite of myself, what truly makes my wheels spin\u00a0is an\u00a0entirely different beast. One that is entirely at odds to what is generally perceived to be\u00a0the typical design aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Looking back, I guess coming of age during\u00a0the 60s and 70s nailed directly\u00a0in front of a\u00a0B&W television didn’t help. As Joey Ramone said “It’s TV’s fault I am this way”. The tube shaped not just\u00a0my design appreciation but also\u00a0my cultural\u00a0tastes. One that fit perfectly into what was to soon become the 80s\u00a0punk side of me. From that point on there was no looking back.<\/p>\n

It was during these years of discovery that\u00a0I started running across designer Art Chantry<\/a>\u2019s work. I couldn\u2019t believe that not only did someone actually think\u00a0the same way\u00a0I did, but was\u00a0able to make a career celebrating lo-fi vernacular art. Suddenly I didn’t feel quite so out if place digging for discarded 50s clipart in my publishing companies trash pile.<\/p>\n

\"e1adb60240eaaa59a7838e3263bb31ae\"<\/a>As the years went on and Art\u2019s work started becoming more and more well-known outside punk circles<\/a>, I began\u00a0to feel like the guy who saw the Stones when they played at the Crawdaddy<\/a>. Imitators started piling on and pretty soon you couldn’t sneeze without running into some company milking the “nostalgia” bandwagon. Nevertheless, Art kept on doing what he did\u2014like no one else.<\/p>\n

Interviews and exhibitions furthered my admiration and respect for the man. It also emboldened me to know that yes, you could do what you are passionate about and be successful. Its a simple thing that pretty often we all lose sight of. Especially in a culture that values self-promotion and loudness over substance.<\/p>\n
