NORTON RECORDS ARCHEOLOGY: Back in 2007, the crew at Brooklyn's Norton Records released this amazing CD of the Sonics playing live in Tacoma, WA in 1964. Half of the disk was recorded at the Tacoma Sports Center. While the recording is an amazing snapshot of the band in that era, it made me wonder if the place was still around in some form. A quick web search led me to a few articles about the former Sports Center, but more importantly...an address.

Sure enough, it was still there and not only that, it seemed to be up for lease. A further real estate listing had some neat inside shots of the place. Its not hard to imagine a bunch of kids all crammed into this place grooving to the Sonics. About a couple of blocks away stood the Chieftain Restaurant which definitely looks like a relic fom that era. ROIR (Reach Out International Records) was origina

ROIR (Reach Out International Records) was originally a cassette-only label founded in 1979 by the late Neil Cooper. Wishing to release LPs, but finding them beyond his means, Cooper approached bands for material they felt wasnt good enough for an LP and a major lable comittment. His releases focused mainly on underground, but popular, avant, punk, and garage bands such as the Bad Brains, Suicide, MC5, Fleshtones and the Dictators among many others. Of particular note were his compllations. New York Thrash (1982) for instance became the definitive album of the NYHC genre.

Garage Sale was released in March 1985 to a waiting garage rock community looking for label representaion. The comp featured fantastic tracks from all across the U.S. but of particualr note were the four New York City bands that, at the time, represented the cream of the crop of the local scene. FORGOTTEN MIDTOWN RnR. Roseland on 52nd St was never meant as a concert venue. Built from the remnants of a Times Square skating rink that originally opened in 1922, the location officially became the last location of the famous Roseland Dance Hall in 1956. Needless to say, it's acoustics were never great. Still, it drew a fair share of great bands throughout it's run. In the 1983, it hosted the outstanding Dave Edmunds Band in a show that was recorded for broadcast. If you ever see it floating around, grab it, its one of his best live performances ever. Of note, the stage was on the side of the oblong venue for this gig. Big Band style. However, in later years the stage was moved to the far end of the hall, transformting a somewhat enjoyable concert experience into a god awful one. Nevertheless, it served as a major venue for the yearly CMJ New Music Seminar shows. Roky Erickson and the Explosives at Southpaw, April 13, 2007. The Elevators were held in high regard in the pre-internet era here in NYC. Even when no one outside of say, 50-100 rabid followers, knew about their outstanding legacy. So it came as no surprise that when Roky came to play here for the first time ever in 2007, it was a massive event. And it did not disappoint. The Explosives were rock solid, Roky was sharp and lucid, if somewhat timid. But that made his rare smiles all the more charming. At the end he even came out and met with people to sign records, CDs, tickets, whatever. I wrote about this band previously, but this is special. A few days ago marked the release of This, Then, Are, The Mosquitos. A 2-CD compilation of pretty much all of thier recorded output, both in studio and live. Lovingly packaged it marks the culmination of a 20+ year quest for a pair of friends to have this band properly represented for the ages. And, its outstanding in almost any way you can measure. A few pages of issue #1 of Outasite fanzine. Written and published by Rochester, NY's very own, Greg Prevost. While many knew Greg as the former lead singer of The Chesterfield Kings, he was also an avid record collector and devoted fan of the 60s himself. His fanzine proudly revels in that time period with its interviews with Roger McGuinn & Chris Hillman of the Byrds as well as Sean Tolby of the Chocolate Watchband. And if that wasnt enough, he also includes reviews of impossibly rare 45s as well. Truly a centerpeice of fan devotion and what all garage fanzines should (& did!) live up to. This issue dates to the early 80s. Number two came out in 1985, number three in 1997 and lastly, number four in 2000. Currently, Greg is still active in music and even pens an occassional piece for Mike Stax's Ugly Things fanzine. This mailing was addressed to music editor Frank Jude Boccio of the Queens College campus newspaper, Phoenix. As expected, I.R.S. often courted local college media during this time. For those in the Tri-State area (or even who just find yourselves on the East Coast in April) it behooves you to come listen to hear the Queen of Cool Ms. Miriam Linna chat about her amazing life. I suspect many of you NYC peeps know this maniac, but to the unitiated, this is old pal and record collector Jeff Shore. Jeff was kind enough to show mututal pal Mark Kahn and I around his and husband Tixiao's new home yesterday. And while this might seem impressive, There's another entire wall of CDs about this size in his study—as well as a similar sized wall of entirely vinyl in a different part of the house. And I'm not even talking about singles which are in about forty or so 45" storage boxes, waiting for shelves to be built. There was a reason college pal Pat Lozito nick named him "The Record Guru" He does put his collection to good use though on his monthly 3 hr online radio show where he spins Rock n' Roll, Garage, R&B/soul. NYC legend Howie Pyro and Fashion Designer Shaolin at Harlan Ellison's Norton Book reading and release party. Sept 9, 2011. Record collector, musician, sideman, DJ, and of course psychotronic movie buff and collector par excellence. Howie, has been involved in pretty every facet of underground music in NYC for the past 40 or so years. Now re-located to Los Angeles, Howie has unfortunately been going through some serious medical issues. And like most creative folk, he needs our support. As a NYC-based site, we’d be remiss in not supporting one of the most genuine and self-effacing cultural icons this city has ever created.

A big thanks this week goes out to @anorakthing for permission in reposting these images. While the 80s garage/mod scene centered around a few clubs scattered among New Jersey and Manhattan (and even Long Island!) you'd have been hard pressed to find anything remotely cool in the borough of Queens. Alas, the borough that birthed the groundbreaking brothers from Forest Hills was more often home to classic rock cover bands. That is, except for one year from late '84 til late '85 when The Subway Club existed. Hosting mainly punk bands, the club also catered to 60s underground sounds. Located just inside the 63rd Drive subway station entrance, the club was truly a godsend for us square-peg-in-the-round-hole types. These images, taken by scenester Scott “Rudie” Rosinski, show NYC mod band, The Scene, playing a gig at the club. In order of appearance Barton Campbell, Drew San, Shigeki Matsukawa, Melanie Rock, and Luis Zuluaga. As Luis relates, Shigeki and Drew “were added in our ‘middle’ period so that Barton could focus on singing instead of playing guitar all the time. Shig wasn’t a Mod but Drew was a 60s enthusiast and added that classic soul/rude boy vibe to the lineup.” Photos ©Scottt Rosinski. Hot on the heels of the recent spate of releases comes yet another one! This one is unique in that it marks one of the last recordings Hilton Valentine, our recent post subject, ever did. The RAF IRREGULARS are a conglomerate of various musicians such as Nada Surf's Matthew Caws, garage vets, Chris Cush and Peter Stuart, Waitresses' drummer Chris Butler and Brett Halpern from Airport 77. The featured track "Impeachment Day" a charming little skiffle influenced tune, was released on Feb 8 of this year. As we here at SSA support not just garage music but musicians as well, we hope everyone will give it a virtual spin. More info on the session to come in a future Hilton post on SSA.
